History |
Margie's Book Nook has been a part of the historic uptown Susanville community since 1983. Margie and Larry Teeter took over Susanville Book Nook in March of 1983, a small 350 square foot used bookstore on Lassen St. With the name changed to Margie's Book Nook we started selling books.
The Lassen Street location was a neat place to do business but in two years Margie's ran out of room. Margie and Larry with the help of a lot of loyal customers, moved a block over to Gay St. and a store front with five rooms and 1200 square feet. Not before son David managed to lock son Daniel in the old store. After breaking the key in the lock "accidentally" a locksmith got to be involved in the move.
It took us 10 years to slowly fill that shop during which we expanded our new book selection. In November 1994 we figured it was time to move again and we bought an old building on Main St. It was just across from Gay Street. The day we closed escrow we got a call saying the snow on the roof was melting and leaking on our renter.. Happy days of owning. We finally moved into the building in March 1995. Once again with lots of help from our good customers and we've been there ever since.
Built in 1893, it is one of the oldest commercial buildings in Susanville. It was built with native stone and had major remodels in 1919 and 1947 when a false front was put on it. Amongst other things the building has housed a general store and a shoe store. The main floor contains approximately 4,200 square feet and comes with a full basement and a loft.. Even though we're starting to overflow with books we're not going to move again as Larry has warned Margie she would need to find a new husband along with a new location.
After years of having lots of fun running a book store we finally talked our son David into coming back and taking over the day to day running of Margie's Book Nook. David joined us in January, 2000. With his arrival we've been adding games, puzzles, cards and whatever else we figure the town needs. And we're always open to suggestions.
We try to be responsible members of our community by being proud and active members of the Historic Uptown Susanville Association and Lassen Chamber Chamber of Commerce. And we're always willing to sell tickets for all sorts of community events.
If you get a chance to visit Historic Uptown Susanville stop in a Margie's Book Nook and say hi to David, Margie and the rest of the crew.
